This diagram is an estimate of the number of planets in our Milky Way galaxy. The exact number is not known. The forecast adjusts automatically as soon as you import new exoplanets.
Basic assumptions of the forecast:
- there are 100 billion stars in the Milky Way (astronomers estimate 100-400 billion)
- the frequency of sun-like stars is based on the distribution within 34 ly around the sun (including the sun)
- stars with the spectral type G (or corresponding temperature) were used as sun-like
- the frequency of planets around stars, rock planets, planets around sun-like stars and planets in the habitable zone is based on previous discoveries of exoplanets (only confirmed exoplanets) including our 8 planets
- the total number of planets also includes planemos and planets around brown dwarfs
