Between the age of a star and its metallicity is a direct link. Stars who have members of Population II, only a small metallicity (and therefore older, min 6 billion years.) Because not too many heavy elements have been bred in the previous stars. In contrast, the population I stars have higher metallicity.
Our sun is still on the population I.
